Growing up in the Pueblo, our children are taught at a very young age to help and contribute to the workload in the households. These tasks are usually taught and often delegated by Hotda (grandmother). By doing these minor chores they allow the adults to tend to more important matters at hand.
A dutiful and responsible little pueblo girl, carrying water to her home for her family, similar to her Grandmother and many female ancestors before her.
The Zuni Olla Maiden fetish symbolizes the Importance of Water and the Vital role Women play in Zuni Society.
A hand carved Elk Antler Olla Maiden with a beautiful Olla Jar set atop her perfectly incised hair. The Olla Jar is detailed with Black Jet pigment and inlaid with red Mediterranean Coral, Sleeping Beauty Turquoise and blue Lapis.
Her eyes are inlaid Black Jet pigment and red Mediterranean Coral mouth. She wears a necklace of red Mediterranean Coral. Her robe has incised geometric motifs and stars of Black Jet, green Serpentine and blue Lapis with a hem detail on her skirt.
Her moccasins are carved to showcase her white leather leg wraps and inlaid with Sleeping Beauty inlay. The soles are burnished for contrast.
