Shrews belong to the 4th successful mammalian family in the world. The Pygmy shrew is the smallest mammal in North America and the second smallest in the entire world.
Shrews can be found in New Mexico in areas around Tucumcari, La Grulla National Wildlife Refuge and Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge, but it has been listed as one of this states endangered species.
Kya'lut'si (Shrew/Mole) medicine represents awareness, grounding and introspection. He is one of the six directional animals. He is present in both healing and hunting directional sets. He is the guardian and protector of the ground, underworld and the symbol of Mother Earth in the Zuni culture. He protects the crops from diseases, destroys mice, rats and other small animals that threaten the harvest.
