Sea Otters are smart and intuitive hunters. Their sensitive noses and whiskers locate prey by the detection of vibrations under the water. Although the sea otter is not a social animal and often lives alone, it does frequently occur in small groups where food sources are plentiful and will rest in a group called a "raft." They use rocks, shells and other hard materials from the ocean floor as shell-crushing tools, while balancing their prey on their chests and stomachs. This is one of the few mammal species to use tools to open shells and dislodge prey.
Troy's swimming sea otter is carved of Deer antler. The eyes are inlaid with Lapis while the whiskers are inlaid Sterling Silver. The nose, ears and tail are burnished to give color and detail. The otter is suspended with a Sterling Silver pin on a Black Belgian Marble.
