Grandmothers are the glue to the family. They know everything under the sun. We all go to her with our questions and for guidance.
Zuni grandmothers are the family matriarch. She knows all the knowledge and keeping the family together. The teacher/bridge to the young children.
A hand carved Elk antler grandmother standing, looking with her Black Jet pigment eyes to see if her grandchildren are still playing by the river. Her mouth and tiny red inlay in her necklace are of Mediterranean Coral with a Lapis center piece. She wears her shawl over her head, like most older traditional grandmothers in Zuni, with materials of Mediterranean Coral, Turquoise, Gold Lip Mother of Pearl, Japanese Coral, Lapis, Pink Mussel Shell, Turquoise and Black Pen Shell. The triangle designs on her shawl are inlaid with Black Jet pigment. On front of her dress are three stars with red Pipe Stone pigment with Variscite inlay. The hem of her dress are stone to stone inlays of Lapis, Turquoise, Purple Spiny Oyster Shell, Cuprite, Gaspeite, Mediterranean Coral, White Clam Shell and Abalone Shell. Her traditional deer skin leg wrappings are finished with tiny Turquoise inlays on both ends of her moccasins.
She will stand there watching over her grandchildren.
