The Zuni people, like many other native tribes use the Moon Mother to mark when certain events will take place each season. She is the one who holds the calendar.
A smaller version of the Moon Mother is hand carved of Deer Antler. Her head dress is carved of Gold Lip Mother of Pearl inlaid with Lapis and Green Serpentine, Lapis and Pipe-Stone pigments. The face is inlaid with Carico Lake Turquoise, Mediterranean Coral with interchanging Black Pen-Shell and Gold Lip Mother of Pearl boarder and a Mediterranean Coral mouth. Her necklaces are inlaid with strands of Mediterranean Coral, Japanese Coral and a Chrysocolla center piece. The robe is designed with Black Jet and Lapis pigment with inlay of Orvil Jack Turquoise, Light Green Serpentine, Lapis, Black Pen-Shell and Mediterranean Coral. The hem of her dress is inlaid with Sleeping Beauty Turquoise and Black Jet pigment. The deer skin wraps are finished with Lapis button or pins. The soles of her moccasins are burnished to give detail.
