A hand carved Butterfly Maiden of Elk Antler. Her hair is expertly incised and detailed in a traditional Zuni Maiden hairstyle with hair buns. Detailed eagle plume (Gold Mother of Pearl) and eagle feather (Antler) are secured with sterling silver.
Her eyes are inlaid black Pen Shell and traditional markings on her face are pigments of black Jet and red Pipestone. (- the black markings represent rain clouds and the red markings represent falling rain.)
She is dressed in Zuni style regalia with a shawl incised and inlaid with pigments of blue Lapis, green Serpentine, red Pipestone. Inlaid stones of green Veriscite and red Mediterranean Coral accent her shoulders with fine details on her hands, fringe on shawl and hem of her dress.
Her necklace is inlaid with natural stones of blue Lapis, Fox Turquoise, green Malachite, red Mediterranean Coral and Gold Mother of Pearl.
The moccasins are carved to show the traditional Zuni style buck skin wraps. Inlaid with Sleeping Beauty turquoise and soles are burnished for contrast.
The wings are hand carved Gold Mother of Pearl showcasing both Gold and White sides of the beautiful shell. The Gold side facing front is incised and inlaid with black Jet pigment and accented with black Pen Shell spots. The White side facing back is inlaid with various accent stones of blue Lapis, Sleeping Beauty turquoise, green Malachite, black Pen Shell and red Mediterranean Coral. The body of the Butterfly is carved of Italian Coral and inlaid into the shell. Wings are secured to the form with steel pins.
