Afghan Travertine is from Afghanistan. This dense closely compacted form of limestone found mostly in banded layers. Most travertine is white or cream colored. It consists mainly of calcium carbonate. It forms when calcium carbonate separates from water through evaporation.
A simple carving of a bird in this light green stone shows layers of white bands between the green. Dark brown colorations also show in this travertine. The eyes on this bird are inlaid Lapis also from Afghanistan.
